BYDL - Outstanding Prospects
Each week, we here at BNN will feature some of the Boston Youth Development League players showing their potential.
North Region
Red-Hot Rampage Reaps NR Reward: 17-year-old Baktu DaWell made a few Wattz headlines during this past week as the rookie left fielder proved he could compete at the plate with his high-school idols. He captured the attention of fans, journalists and North Region officials last week and today took home Player of the Week honors for his effort.
He cracked 22 hits in 35 at-bats to put up a .629 average. DaWell collected 6 home runs, 24 RBIs and scored 18 runs.
Thus far this year DaWell has hit .482 with 12 home runs and 42 RBIs.
South Region
SR Player of the Week Goes to Library of West Quincy: West Quincy Atomatoys left fielder Forrest Library walked away with the South Region Player of the Week Award today after putting up some impressive numbers over the past seven days.
"The Atomatoys fans are really behind me right now," said the 15-year-old. "That helps. They give you the confidence to go out there and do better."
Library batted .467 (14-for-30) with 7 home runs and 15 RBIs this week on his way to the award.
Thus far this season in 19 games Library is batting .461 with 10 home runs, 22 RBIs and 27 runs scored. He has 35 hits in 76 at-bats.
Sophomore Report
Below are some of the sophomores (2nd-year players in the new 4-year BYDL arrangement) who are expected to be top draft picks in 2302.
LF Forrest Library, West Quincy Atomatoys - 35/76 (.461), 7 2B, 10 HR, 15 BB, 27 R, 22 RBI, 11 SO
Scouting Report: Just named the Player of the Week, some can already see that he will be a plus prospect in two years. Great at connecting the bat to the ball, which should help him progress. Expectations would translate to a .300+ hitter in the CBO. Short and thin but still has a lot of pop on his bat, which could see him as a power hitter as his body matures. Expected to continue to progress as a hitter. Not exceptional as a defender. Will earn playing time purely based on how well his bat works. No innate feel for the game so not a "baseball man."
LF Mucky Mutfruit, South Beach Waves - 30 for 86 (.349), 6 2B, 8 HR, 13 BB, 24 R, 22 RBI, 23 SO, SB, CS
Scouting Report: May be a #1 overall pick based on his power alone. Kills fastballs. Wary against off-speed pitches. Decent speed but cautious on the base paths. Not particularly self-motivated so depends on other to pep him up. Has not shown that he loves the game so may give up once he starts to struggle.
RF Bob Hatman, Beerthirty Sippers - 32 for 86 (.372), 4 2B, 3 HR, 10 BB, 30 R, 16 RBI, 12 SO
Scouting Report: Not outstanding in any particular area of batting, but solid in all. Easily could be a .250/20/70 type hitter in the CBO. Not the fastest, but covers enough ground to allow his CF to shade to the opposite outfield. Can be a team leader since he tends to be the person players look up to, even older players.
RP Hollywood Joe Horn, Andrew Station Southies - 9 G, 0 GS, 0-0, 5.40, 11.2 IP, 15 HA, 7 ER, HR, 6 BB, 14 K
Scouting Report: Noodle arm pitcher who has been behind his older teammates in starts but is expected to begin pitching as a starter soon. He tries every pitch he can think of and is about the same in his delivery which could make him hard to hit in time. He is outspoken, which makes his coaches nervous and sometimes the dugout, too. Speaks about himself in third person, which also makes some question his sanity.
3B Hazmatt Zuniga, Beantown Sprouts - 24 for 83 (.289), 3 2B, 3B, 5 HR, 18 BB, 21 R, 17 RBI, 22 SO
Scouting Report: A future power hitter in the CBO, assuming he continues to develop. Will be a decent 3B in his career. Needs to put on weight as he matures to fill out his lanky frame. May have some problems being overpowered at the plate but a good coach can help him improve bat speed. Constantly trying to find a way to improve his game. Considered a smart, hard-working player who is destined to make it.
