BYDL - Outstanding Prospects
Each week, we here at BNN will feature some of the Boston Youth Development League players showing their potential.
North Region
Drool of Pleasant Crowned Best Player: It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the North Region, but last week Jake Drool of the Pleasant Minigunners reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week. Drool rocked opposing pitching for a .586 average (17-for-29), 1 home run and 6 RBIs to come away with the award.
This season Drool is batting .518 with 71 hits, 6 home runs, 28 RBIs, 10 walks, .554 OBP and has scored 43 runs. He has played in 28 games.
South Region
Player of the Week: South Beach's Mutfruit: 16-year-old Mucky Mutfruit made a few South Beach headlines during this past week as the rookie left fielder proved he could compete at the plate with his high-school idols. He captured the attention of fans, journalists and South Region officials last week and today took home Player of the Week honors for his effort.
He cracked 13 hits in 26 at-bats to put up a .500 average. Mutfruit collected 4 home runs, 16 RBIs and scored 11 runs.
Mutfruit is hitting .375 for the season with 14 home runs, 41 RBIs and 42 runs scored. He has 51 hits in 136 at-bats and played in 31 games.
Infielder Report
Below are some of the top-rated infielders around the Boston Youth Development League.
1B Angus McGuyver, Spectacle Island Reapers, Freshman - 41/111 (.369), 10 2B, 8 HR, 34 R, 35 RBI, 23 BB, 13 SO
Scouting Report: Sweet swing that will lead to success as a batter. Has the potential to be a power hitter but probably will not be among league leaders in homers. Needs to improve his eye before he can be star potential. Not particularly outstanding with the glove, which will probably keep him at 1B instead of the OF. Not a decisive person. Not particularly judgmental, either.
2B Diamond Ball, Jamaica-U Point Death Rockets, Sophomore - 34/61 (.557), 5 2B, 3B, 11 HR, 25 R, 33 RBI, 9 BB, 4 SO
Scouting Report: Confident with shrewd perception and meticulous mechanics that should translate into a high batting average. Has power potential to be the best 2B home run hitter in the CBO one day. Fun to watch in batting practice but needs to earn more time on the field. Has the highest hitting ceiling for all 2Bers in the BYDL. Can play a number of different positions but most likely to settle in at 2B. Could develop into a SS if he put extra work in at that position. Relies on his natural talents and becomes complacent instead of working to be the best. Coaches tend to punish him with taking away playing time when he doesn't work hard in practice.
3B Sun Crockett, State House Orphans, Sophomore - 49/134 (.366), 16 2B, 15 HR, 37 R, 51 RBI, 25 BB, 44 SO
Scouting Report: Strong for his age. Already a power hitter but can become even more deadly at the plate in time. He is still learning how to approach pitches, but expected to develop a plus eye in time to help him cut down on strikeouts. Expected to develop into a 1st-round talent for the 2302 draft. Not a workout warrior but does what needs to be done on the practice field. Not particularly close with teammates and would just play wherever there is a bat and ball.
SS Grool Manycaps, South Charles Bank Moonies, Senior - 43/120 (.358), 16 2B, 10 HR, 37 R, 33 RBI, 27 BB, 32 SO
Scouting Report: OSA scouts are wishy-washy on him for the 2300 draft, which will probably make him a mid-to-late rounder. Not a great swinger, so he needs to work on making contact even if it is just for a base hit. He'll get punished in the BMU/CBO if his swing does not improve. Good eye and can draw a walk when a pitcher is not throwing good pitches. Patience is his best virtue. Still, he needs to hit good pitches better. Pretty good defender with a strong arm. Could be a SS but may also end up at 3B at the next level. More loyal to the uniform than the players in the uniform. Lives and breathes Moonies ball, thinking about almost nothing else. Strong work ethic will help him develop more, even if his talent is not as good as others.
