Walkers news: May 28 -- Cedar Rapids 5, St. Louis 3, Game 2
Record: 27-24, 4th, 7 GB Cedar Rapids
Travis Swaggerty capped a four-run bottom of the ninth inning for Cedar Rapids with a two-run, walk-off homer off St. Louis reliever Oscar Martinez to give Twin Cities a 5-3 win, a sweep of their doubleheader and three-game series at Connie Mack Stadium (1960).
With a 3-1 lead, rather than go with struggling closer Scott Rissler, St. Louis opted to send Gil Meier back out for a second inning in the bottom of the ninth after he had retired the Grapplers in order in the eighth.
It didn't work out as planned.
Jordan Batista opened the inning with a double.
Jose Morilla was then given an intentional walk.
Martinez then took over and was promptly bludgeoned.
Steve Ricca greeted him with a double to tie it at 3-3.
Arnold Hammond then reached on an infield single.
Swaggerty ended it on a 3-2 pitch, driving it 409 feet over the high wall in right field.
Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Ivan Alonzo allowed two runs on four hits over the first six innings. He struck out five and walked the same.
Veteran Phil Bickford supplied 1.2 innings of relief, giving up the Walkers final run in the top of the eighth.
Luis Ortiz finished off the eight for the Grapplers.
Cal-fei Liu (3-0) worked a scoreless ninth, which would set himself up to earn the win.
