Walkers news: June 1 -- St. Louis 16, Akron 1
Record: 30-25, 4th, 4.5 GB Cedar Rapids
Tied 1-1, Daniel Becerra hit a grand slam to highlight a five-run top of the third inning for St. Louis, and the River Walkers poured it on from there routing Akron 16-1 at Candlestick Park (1993).
Becerra's slam drove in the final four runs of the outburst for the Walkers.
The first run scored when Jose Ramirez drew a bases-loaded walk from Flying Feet starting pitcher Orland Claude.
Claude issued two walks, hit a batter in the inning, in addition to being taken deep by Becerra.
St. Louis added a single run in the fourth -- Will Banfield led off with a double off reliever Braxton Ashcraft and scored on a Freudis Nova ground out -- and two more in the sixth -- A RBI double from rookie starting pitcher Kyle Smarr and a run-scoring single from Eric Peretz -- to up its lead to 9-1.
The Walkers poured it on late with three runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth.
Peretz drove in two runs with a single in the eighth, while Becerra collected his fifth RBI of the game, also with a single.
Nova hit a three-run homer to highlight the ninth.
All the offense overshadowed a strong MBL debut for Smarr.
Making a start for a rotation which needed a rest, he allowed one run on four hits over six innings.
Smarr (1-0) struck out five and walked two.
Luke Dunkin pitched a pair of scoreless innings.
Oscar Martinez followed suit in the ninth.
