BYDL - Outstanding Prospects
Each week, we here at BNN will feature some of the Boston Youth Development League players showing their potential.
North Region
McGhee Collects Player of the Week Award: So far in his young career, Jig McGhee has kept a low profile, but after his performance at the plate last week, he attracted the notice of the rest of the North Region in a big way as he was named the Player of the Week today for his efforts.
The 18-year-old Beantown Sprouts left fielder hit at a torrid .652 clip as he collected 15 hits in 23 at-bats, 6 home runs, 17 RBIs and 14 runs scored.
This season McGhee has hit at a .435 clip with 65 RBIs, 16 home runs and 55 runs scored. He has played in 37 games.
South Region
Sapphire's Strong Week Earns SR Trophy: It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the South Region, but last week Emerald Sapphire of the State House Orphans reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week. Sapphire rocked opposing pitching for a .538 average (14-for-26), 5 home runs and 17 RBIs to come away with the award.
In 36 games this season Sapphire has compiled a .371 batting average with 56 hits and 9 home runs. He has also scored 36 times and knocked in 36 runs.
Milestones
37-Game Hitting Streak for Mahan: Bill Mahan continued his streak at Tempest Ballpark today, even as the ballgame did not go his way. The Lynn Pier second baseman was 1-for-4 in today's contest and now has hit safely in his last 37 games. The Gamers were not as fortunate, losing 9-8 to the Beantown Sprouts.
"Mahan was hitting everything we threw at him," said Beantown manager Friday Danielson. "He is a tough out. Fortunately, things went our way in the ballgame today and we came away with a win."
Bill Mahan grounded out in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, grounded out in the 4th, grounded out in the 5th and was hit by a pitch in the 7th.
Mahan is currently batting .402 with 2 home runs and 24 RBIs. He has at least one hit in all 37 games for the Gamers.
Hit Streak Now at 34 for Drool: Jake Drool of the Pleasant Minigunners tagged 1 hit in today's 17-3 loss to the Fraternal Post 115 Leaders at Ballpark of Hamden HS to run his hitting streak to 34 straight games.
"I realize it's unlikely to have a 34-game streak and not have a couple losses mixed in," he said later. "But it still takes the fun out of it."
Jake Drool walked in the 1st, flied out in the 3rd, walked in the 5th, singled in the 7th and grounded out in the 9th.
This season Drool has hit 9 home runs and posted a .512 batting average. His .512 average only trails Diamond Ball of the Jamaica-U Point Death Rockets.
Outfielder Report
Below are some of the top-rated outfielders around the Boston Youth Development League regardless of class.
LF Baktu DaWell, Wattz Ups, Senior - 69/149 (.463), 6 2B, 2 3B, 18 HR, 66 R, 58 RBI, 43 BB, 27 SO, CS
Scouting Report: Has an excellent eye which can help him draw walks as shown in his production of more than one a game on average. His contact rating needs to improve so that he does not swing and miss as much. When he does make contact, possesses good power and gap potential. Not a particularly gifted outfielder but his arm makes him capable of throwing out runners, which projects him as a RF in the CBO. Lacks an edge, so runs on the fumes of his natural talents, which does not make him a sure 1st-rounder. However, OSA rates him as a Top 5 pick.
LF Jig McGhee, Beantown Sprouts, Senior - 67/154 (.435), 7 2B, 2 3B, 16 HR, 55 R, 65 RBI, 32 BB, 32 SO, 3 SB, CS
Scouting Report: Outstanding defender and hitter makes him a sure Top 5 pick in the 2300 draft. Lots of raw power allows him to punish BYDL pitchers who make poor pitches. His low contact ratings will make him struggle at first in the BMU once he is drafted. Great speed, which could make him a threat on the basepaths as he gains confidence. Could project at CF in CBO. Likes to be watched and will draw attention his way, positive or negative. Not the greatest work ethic so needs good coaching.
LF Jake Drool, Pleasant Minigunners, Junior - 86/168 (.512), 22 2B, 3B, 9 HR, 54 R, 37 RBI, 13 BB, 15 SO
Scouting Report: Great production in the BYDL but extremely limited against lefties which may make him tough to move up the prospect ladder. Makes good contact against righties and has been hitting over his projections against lefties this season (25/47 against lefties).
CF Jesse Mazterson, South Charles Bank Moonies, Sophomore - 56/158 (.354), 16 2B, 18 HR, 54 R, 54 RBI, 27 BB, 37 SO
Scouting Report: Great power for a CF. Long and lanky so just swings as hard as he can. That can help him succeed in the BYDL but will punish him at the next level if he does not develop a better approach at the plate. Like Drool above, Mazterson is scouted to struggle against righties (instead of lefties). That will limit his draft stock if he can only start against left-handed pitchers. Needs to learn that effort reaps rewards. Needs to learn to take coaches' advice.
RF Supper Singleton, Castle Freedom, Freshman - 51/143 (.357), 10 2B, 3B, 12 HR, 35 R, 36 RBI, 30 BB, 31 SO
Scouting Report: Has shown good plate discipline and projects to walk a lot at the next level as he learns to recognize a different array of pitches. Interesting to see how his power potential progresses. Will not hit for average but will hit his fair share of homers. Not exceptional at defense but makes the routine plays. Quicker to recognize faults in others' games rather than his own. Smart player and does not ask for much. Needs to put more into his game, though, before he can be considered a top prospect.
