I remember this happening last year as well. As more powerful cards come out, the spenders (trying to move beyond the cetacea-insensitive "whale" pejorative) make it very difficult to keep swimming in the top leagues. I was a couple of wins away from Perfect (hum the tune of "Glory Days" everybody) a few weeks ago, but was chased out of Diamond soon thereafter. I'm assuming some of the best cards from last night will continue this trend. The content release strategy makes good sense, just makes FTP a tougher strategy as the year progresses.
On the happier side, as an FTP player you aren't spending money on these computer models of historical players, and are instead saving it for (choose answer that best applies):
a. other computer simulations (Jai-Alai, Steeplechase?).
b. rent.
c. merchandise for teams that don't exist anymore.
d. pain meds, for a problem resulting from hunching over your computer too long.
