1906 World Series Game Recaps (cont.)

October 15th, 1906 World Series Game 4: Boston Beaneaters (2-1) @ St. Louis Browns (1-2)
SLA: Kevin Slowey (0-1; 5.62) v BSN: Heinie Berger (1-0; 3.00)

The Beaneaters control this one from the get-go and, despite a late rally by the Browns, get a fairly comfortable win to put them just a game away from glory. Runs in the 2nd on a Warren Cromartie single and again in the 3rd on another one by Leon Durham give them a lead they never really look like relinquishing, and they get out to 5-0 before the hosts score a couple in the 8th and one more in the 9th to make it somewhat respectable. Berger once again goes the distance to keep his perfect record intact and it’s nigh on impossible to see Boston losing from here.

FINAL SCORE: Boston 5, St. Louis 3

BOX SCORE

October 16th, 1906 World Series Game 5: Boston Beaneaters (3-1) @ St. Louis Browns (1-3)
SLA: Hooks Wiltse (0-1; 1.12) v BSN: Kent Greenfield (1-0; 4.00)

For the first half of this one it looks a carbon-copy of the day before, as Boston cruise out to a 3-0 lead and look all set to lock down the Championship. But then the whole game is flipped completely on its head in the 5th when the Browns bats get into Greenfield for 5, three of which come via a bases-loaded double by Sebring. One more in the 7th on a single by Rube Oldring makes sure of it as the Browns send the series back to Boston on more of a knife-edge than it might seem.

FINAL SCORE: St. Louis 6, Boston 3

BOX SCORE

October 18th, 1906 World Series Game 6: St. Louis Browns (2-3) @ Boston Beaneaters (3-2)
BSN: Andy Coakley (0-1; 2.25) v SLA: Frank Castillo (1-0; 0.00)

There’s no questioning the Browns’ heart, but in the end they come up just short and the Beaneaters deservedly earn the club’s first Championship with a gripping and hard-fought win here. An early unearned run gives St. Louis fans plenty of hope until a 3-run 3rd by the home side puts them on top in a messy affair with each side committing 4 errors. Even then, the Browns dig deep and clamber their way back to 3-3 with runs in the 4th and 7th frames, but as has been the case for almost the entire series, Boston finds the ready response with a Sean Burroughs RBI single in the 8th holding up all the way to the final out as Coakley sends them down in order in the 9th to win it all.

A magnificent advertisement for the league, and both teams can hold their heads high for the way this series was contested, but there can only ever be one winner and I congratulate the Beaneaters for their success. Tempus effulgeo to you, Beantown, may you shine as bright as the brightest star.

I said at the start of the year I thought this would be one of the closest seasons yet for the FL, but I never in my wildest dreams imagined it to be as tight-run as it played out. Here’s to many more along those lines.

Boston 4, St. Louis 3

BOX SCORE

Boston Beaneaters win series 4 games to 2.
