Henke was tragically the first player to die from injuries on the baseball field. In August of 1885 while playing in a game for the Atlanta team of the Southern League, Henke smashed a base hit. While running past first, he colllided with Lefty Marr of the Nashville team and suffered a ruptured liver. He died the following day and his teammates held a fundraising game for is family not long after. Marr was apparently very shaken up and emotional about the incident for a long time afterwards.
