Each week, we here at BNN will feature some of the Boston Youth Development League players showing their potential.
North Region
Star of the Week Honored in NR: Gin Kwon burst onto the North Region stage in a big way last week. This promising rookie left fielder for Lynn Pier garnered everyone's respect by putting up some remarkable numbers and picking up the Player of the Week trophy.
The 18-year-old haunted opposing pitchers hitting .720 (18-for-25) with 2 home runs and 8 RBIs last week.
This season Kwon is batting .472 with 120 hits, 13 home runs, 68 RBIs, .539 OBP and has scored 78 runs.
South Region
Avina on Fire, Named Player of the Week: So far in his young career, Avi Avina has kept a low profile, but after his performance at the plate last week, he attracted the notice of the rest of the South Region in a big way as he was named the Player of the Week today for his efforts.
The 16-year-old State House Orphans catcher hit at a torrid .818 clip as he collected 9 hits in 11 at-bats, 2 home runs, 5 RBIs and 6 runs scored.
For the year Avina has hit .330 with 2 home runs, 18 RBIs and scored 25 runs.
Milestones
Hit Streak Now at 53 for Drool: Jake Drool, left fielder for the Pleasant Minigunners, ran his consecutive-game hitting streak to 53 games with 2 hits in his club's 4-3 victory today over the Boston Harbor Harborfellows at Ballpark of Portland HS today.
"I don't really know why it's even happening," he said with a grin after the game. "So asking me how long I can keep it up is kind of irrelevant. It'll end when it ends."
Jake Drool singled in the 1st, flied out in the 3rd, singled in the 6th, flied out in the 7th and walked in the 9th.
Drool is presently batting .496 with 12 home runs, 76 runs scored and 56 RBIs. His OBP is .547.
