July 2nd, 1989
Today the Cubs are pitching Randy Johnson (4-9, 3.07).
The Giants have Scott Sanderson (4-6, 3.78).
I have seen very little of Johnson, going 1 for 4.
I took care of a grounder from Billy Hatcher, the first batter of the game.
I led off for the home side and hit one to the wall in right centre for a double!
Stolen base #62.
Unfortunately, I was left on 3rd.
I got the 3rd out in the 3rd off another Hatcher grounder.
I came up with two out in the 3rd and took a walk.
I was caught trying to steal 2nd.
I got the 3rd out in the 6th off a Bret Barberie grounder.
I came up with two out in the 6th and grounded out to Chris Hoiles at 1st.
I returned the favour for the 2nd out in the 7th.
After that, though, Paul O'Neill scored on a Mike Brumley single.
Cubs lead 1-0
In our half, we got it back and then some as Robby Thompson belted a pinch-hit three-run homer!
Giants lead 3-1
In the 8th we made a Priske - Giles - Hernandez double play to get Johnson and Hatcher to end the frame.
I came up with two out in the 8th and struck out. (That was Johnson's 12th, setting a Cubs record.)
With a man on and one out in the 9th, Jim went to Jeff Robinson to finish things off.
He walked the first guy he saw but got the next two to earn his first save.
I went 1 for 3 with a double, a walk, a stolen base, and a caught stealing.
The All-Star Voting Update came out. Mark Davis and I lead, still. Alan Cockrell is running 2nd and Frank Viola is in 3rd.
On our travel day we found out that we are now the #2 team on the Weekly Power Rankings, behind our five game winning streak.
We know there is only one ranking that matters, though, and we trail the Dodgers by 4.5 games (and the Reds by one).
Next we are in Pittsburgh.
