June 15-16, 2037: vs Washington (2)
Game 1: Stop me if you've heard this before - Josh Carsello pitched a great game and Eric Titcombe bailed out the offense with a big homer, as the Rays took down Washington 6-3 at Publix Park. Carsello was brilliant today, going 7 3 1 1 2 11 to improve to 6-3, 2.53 but allowed a run in his final inning of work which enabled the Nationals to tie it up at 1. But in the bottom of the 7th Titcombe restored the Rays lead with a massive 3-run shot to dead center, his AL-best 19th of the year. Titcombe had driven in the earlier run as well, and Jeff Baez's RBI double and Jon Jimenez's RBI single padded the lead later in the 7th. Tony Rey couldn't quite make it through 2 innings, allowing a pair in the 9th before Mike Wherry had to get the final out, a strikeout of former Ray Eric Batchelder. Toronto won another 1-run, extra-inning game to stay 1 back.
Game 2: The Rays scored early and often in whitewashing Washington 10-0 to sweep the 2-game mini-series with the Nats. Jeremy Curtis was excellent, going 7 4 0 0 1 6 and improving to 5-2, 2.39 while Chris Toombs completed the shutout with 2 1-hit innings with 3 whiffs. Jon Jimenez was the biggest among several offensive stars tonight, driving in four with a pair of doubles, while Jaiden Hardaway hit HR #11 as part of a three-hit day as did Jim Gebers with #6. Jeff Baez added a 2-run homer (#7) and Omar Rodriguez was 3-5 with an RBI triple. The Jays lost at Citi Field against the Mets, so the lead has grown to 2 games.
Team record: 46-20. Next up: Off to the nation's capital to play 2 more against these guys.
