August 17-20, 2037: at Houston (4)

Game 1: The Rays' 10-game winning streak was snapped as they lost in walk-off fashion to Houston 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th. Jim Golunski had some unusual struggles, loading the bases with one out before giving up an RBI single to Jesus Pargas to win it for the Astros. Jon Soranno started and was pretty much terrible again, going 4.1 5 3 3 5 4, but Mike Wherry came in and threw 2 2/3 scoreless and that allowed Danny Ayala to tie it up with #21 in the 6th. Daniel Vasquez also had a nice game for a losing cause, going 3-4 with a double and an RBI triple.

Game 2: Never get into a land war in Asia and never try to win a shootout with the Rays. The Astros found this out today in a 10-9 Tampa Bay win as Jon Jimenez and Danny Ayala were a two-man wrecking crew. The pair went back-to-back with their second homers of the game in the 8th to put the Rays ahead 9-8 after they had wreaked havoc earlier. Jimenez finished 4-5 with a double, two homers (#19 and 20) and 3 RBI while Ayala continues to make up for a poor first half with a 3-5, 2-HR, 6 RBI day, giving him 23 dingers on the year. Despite those two combining for 9 RBI, it was Eric Titcombe's RBI double to finish off the 8th which provided the ultimate winning margin. Needless to say, Rays pitching did not cover itself in glory today with Tim Gates authoring a rough start (3.1 8 6 6 3 4), Chris Toombs giving up a pair of runs, and Danny Medina getting win #5 despite allowing a run to Houston in the 8th to get them back within one. Kikuo Kawase however did his job with a 1-2-3 9th, whiffing a pair and getting save #28.

Game 3: Today's game was the antithesis of yesterday's in one respect, but very much like it in another. The main difference was the lack of runs as unlike yesterday's shootout today's game saw Houston take a 2-1 lead into the 8th instead of an 8-7 one. But the result was the same as Rays power won it for Tampa Bay in that inning with Eric Titcombe stepping up and delivering a pinch-2-run homer (#36) to give them a 3-2 win. Jeremy Curtis started and pitched well (5.2 3 2 2 2 7), and Mike Wherry did a nice job over the next 1 1/3, earning his 2nd win. Jim Golunski was so efficient in the 8th (1-2-3 on 9 pitches) that he came back out for the 9th and recorded a 2-inning save, his 5th of the year. Danny Ayala had gotten the Rays their lone run through the first 7 on HR #24.

August 20: Claimed 1B/P Camren Nethercutt off waivers from Columbus; optioned him to AAA Durham.

We just can't quit Nethercutt, whom we get back for the second time this year on waivers after trading him to Columbus for Damani Cotton. He'll probably be up for us in September, and we'll use him as a reliever and pinch-hitter. That is if we don't trade him for another asset.

Game 4: Josh Carsello shook out of his funk to deliver a dominating performance and Eric Titcombe's power surge continued as the Rays took 3 of 4 in the series with a 4-1 win over the Astros. Carsello didn't allow a hit until Alex Padilla's double leading off the 7th and pitched into the 8th going 7.2 2 1 1 1 9 in his best outing in nearly a month. He's now 12-5, 3.36 and needs to string together a few more games like this to get back in the Cy Young race. Kikuo Kawase recorded his 29th save with a 2-whiff 9th. Titcombe meanwhile picked up where he left off with yesterday's 8th-inning game-winning homer by going yard in his first two at-bats today, a solo shot in the first and a 2-run job in the 3rd, which gives him an MLB-best 38. Jaiden Hardaway led off the game with #23.

Team record: 90-31. Next up: The road continues way out west with 3 in Oakland.
