Another image that hockeymonkey10 made available recently is a dated 1966 portrait of veteran pitcher Chuck Estrada. Still an active pitcher in 1966, he was part of the newly renamed California Angels on Opening Day but was returned to the Baltimore Orioles on May 15th without ever having ever pitched. In turn, the Orioles flipped him to the Cubs one day later.
My information is too sketchy for my taste, but I get that teams in 1966 and 1967, due in part to the demise of the Bonus Baby program, were allowed to begin the season with 28-man rosters, cutting back to 25 no later than May 15.
I'm trying to pin down players who were these "extras," but who would depart without ever seeing action. Estrada makes three I know of -- Chuck Schilling (Twins) in '66 and Chris Cannizzaro (Tigers) in '67 were the first. Anybody have a list of those May 15th transactions?
