September 28-30, 2023: at Kansas City (3)
Playing out the string ahead of the playoffs, the Rays won the opener but dropped the final 2 against Kansas City. We had some transactions: IF/OF Vidal Brujan and P Alex Vesia were activated from the IL with Heliot Ramos and Colin Poche sent to Durham.
Tarik Skubal was great in his regular season finale and will pitch either Game 2 or 3 vs the White Sox in the playoffs. The young lefty went 5.2 1 1 1 3 7 in a 4-2 Rays win and finished 12-4, 3.81 with Tampa Bay. Nick Anderson picked up save #36 in his final appearance of the year. A 3-run homer from Austin Meadows (#21) was the big hit of the game.
Mike Clevinger wasn't very good and the Rays were blanked 7-0 with several regulars resting in the middle game. Clevinger finished 5 7 4 4 3 4 and slumped in September with a final record of 2-3, 4.69 in 12 Rays starts.
The Rays dropped the regular season finale 4-3 to Kansas City, after losing leads of 2-0 and 3-2. Carter Kieboom had a 2-run homer (#13) to lead the Rays while Matt Peacock started strong but struggled in the middle innings to end up 4.2 6 4 4 2 7 and finish the year 11-10, 4.41. He'll be the odd man out of the playoff rotation which should go Glasnow, Skubal, Clevinger and Sale.
Final Regular Season Record: 96-66. Next up: the ALDS vs the White Sox starting in Chicago.
Playoff race update: As expected, the White Sox took the AL Central and Milwaukee the NL Central.
