North Region
#4 Beantown Sprouts 0 vs #1 Green Future Sea Urchins 2
Game 1 Summary:
Home Field Advantage: Salloum, Green Future Open Elite Eight with Win
The Green Future Sea Urchins powered past the visiting Beantown Sprouts, 6-2, in the opener of the Elite Eight at Future Stadium today. Green Future shortstop Jesse Salloum was 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 singles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once, to lead the charge. The Sea Urchins now lead the series 1-0.
The fans who came to support the Sea Urchins were pleased with the outcome. It was what they had hoped for when they passed through the turnstiles at Future Stadium.
Salloum said his team "played with determination."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Future Stadium. The scheduled starters for the game are Justin Lesh for Beantown and Tiger Fanne for Green Future.
Game 2 Summary:
Sea Urchins Dominate, Sweep Elite Eight
The Green Future Sea Urchins proved to be too much to handle for the Beantown Sprouts in the Elite Eight, and a sweep was the end result.
Green Future punched its ticket to the Final Four on the strength of a 3-2 win in the deciding game, which wrapped up the series 2-0.
Green Future shortstop Jesse Salloum, named series MVP, was instrumental in the sweep, as he mashed Beantown pitching to the tune of a .714 average, with a .750 on-base percentage. He had 0 home runs, drove in 3 RBI and scored 1 runs.
The Green Future Sea Urchins don't know who they will face in the next round. They will play the winner of the Lynn Pier Gamers - South Charles Bank Moonies series. Lynn Pier leads the series 1 game to 0. The Final Four schedule will be announced after the Elite Eight finishes.
#3 Lynn Pier Gamers 2 vs #2 South Charles Bank Moonies 1
Game 1 Summary:
Moonies Hammered by Kwon, Drop Game 1 to Gamers
With left fielder Gin Kwon leading the charge, the Lynn Pier Gamers got a road win over the South Charles Bank Moonies, 11-3, in Game 1 of the Elite Eight today. Kwon went 4 for 5 with a home run and 3 singles. He scored 3 runs and drove in 2 at Riptide Park to help Lynn Pier take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series.
Lynn Pier used the clutch hitting of Dave Beetlejuice to capture the win. The shortstop drilled a 2-run double in the top of the seventh inning to give the Gamers the lead, 6-3. For the game, Beetlejuice had 1 single and 2 doubles in 5 at-bats.
"Winning is contagious," said Kwon. "We're looking forward to the next game."
Game 2 is scheduled for tomorrow at Riptide Park. Slated to start are John Massman for Lynn Pier and Cobra Cobratea for South Charles Bank.
Game 2 Summary:
Dimecup Blasts Gamers, Moonies Take Game 2, 12-7
With right fielder Ben Dimecup leading the charge, the South Charles Bank Moonies defeated the visiting Lynn Pier Gamers, 12-7, in Game 2 of the Elite Eight today. Dimecup was 2 for 4 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 at Riptide Park to help South Charles Bank force a 1-1 tie in the best-of-3 series.
Sam Pennewell, the South Charles Bank catcher, contributed a 2-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 7-5, Moonies. For the game, Pennewell went 1 for 3 with a double and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2.
"It's on me," said Gamers manager Adrian Blessing. "The guys I sent out there today were the wrong ones for the situation. I'll be sure to send the right ones out next time."
Game 3 is set to be played Wednesday at Lynn Pier Park. Slated to start are Cobra Cobratea for the South Charles Bank Moonies and Bobby McDonald for the the Lynn Pier Gamers.
Game 3 Summary:
Lynn Pier Takes Elite Eight in Deciding Game
Boston Youth Development League fans were certainly not disappointed with this North Region Elite Eight.
The two teams were evenly matched and the series went to the final game, with the Lynn Pier Gamers prevailing over the South Charles Bank Moonies to advance to the Final Four.
Lynn Pier won the final game by a score of 8-4 at Lynn Pier Park and that sealed the series 2-1.
"Things were tense in our clubhouse and dugout before and during this game, but we can let loose a bit now -- the hard work is over, for now," said second baseman Bill Mahan, who earned MVP honors.
For the series, Mahan hit .615 with a .667 on-base percentage. He had 0 home runs, 4 RBI and scored 4 runs.
The Lynn Pier Gamers will play against the Green Future Sea Urchins in the next round. Green Future won their series against the Beantown Sprouts 2 games to 0. The Final Four schedule will be announced after the Elite Eight finishes.
South Region
#4 Hester Mechanists 1 vs #1 Diamond City Newsboys 2
Game 1 Summary:
Fairley, Mechanists Wallop Newsboys in Game 1 of E8
Fairprice Fairley had the composure of a veteran and the results to prove it.
The 18-year-old Hester center fielder played with poise beyond his years in a blowout 26-0 victory for the Mechanists. Fairley was 3 for 6 with 2 home runs and a walk, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 6 on the day. The win gives the Mechanists a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 Elite Eight.
Hester left fielder Justin Nearhoof delivered a 2-run single in the top of the second. Overall, he went 3 for 6, picking up 1 home run, 1 single, and 1 double. He scored 3 runs and knocked in 6.
"Things broke our way today and that's great," Mechanists manager Aaron Grizzly said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet."
Game 2 is scheduled for tomorrow at Hangman's Alley Athletics Park. Slated to start are Buddy Oralingo for the Hester Mechanists and Dave Cregger for the the Diamond City Newsboys.
Game 2 Summary:
Mechanists Hammered by Peaeye, Drop Game 2 to Newsboys
With right fielder Magnum Peaeye leading the charge, the Diamond City Newsboys defeated the visiting Hester Mechanists, 11-7, in Game 2 of the Elite Eight today. Peaeye was 2-5 with 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice at Hangman's Alley Athletics Park to help Diamond City force a 1-1 tie in the best-of-3 series.
The game was all tied up in the bottom of the eighth, until Peaeye delivered big-time for Diamond City, stroking a dramatic 2-run home run off Art Noyes. The game-changing hit put the Newsboys on top, 9-7.
"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Peaeye told the Diamond City Today.
Game 3 is set to be played Thursday at Ballpark of the Mechanists. Slated to start are Dave Cregger for Diamond City and Charred Lee Widemore for Hester.
Game 3 Summary:
Newsboys Prevail, as Elite Eight Goes to the Wire
The sweet swing of Ross Merchantman has led his team through the Elite Eight.
The Diamond City Newsboys star earned series MVP honors as his club downed the Hester Mechanists to advance to the Final Four.
The Newsboys won the final game at Ballpark of the Mechanists by a score of 15-4 and the series 2-1.
"I'm seeing the ball well and happy to contribute to a win," said Merchantman. "I hope it continues for the rest of the playoffs."
For the series, Merchantman hit .556 with a .733 on-base percentage. He had 1 home runs, drove in 4 RBI and scored 6 runs.
The Diamond City Newsboys don't know who they will face in the next round. They will play the winner of the Andrew Station Southies - Boston Common Baby Bellies series. That series is tied at 1 game apiece. The Final Four schedule will be announced after the Elite Eight finishes.
#3 Andrew Station Southies 1 vs #2 Boston Common Baby Bellies 2
Game 1 Summary:
Black, Boston Common Start Elite Eight Strong with Home Win
With center fielder James Black leading the charge, the Boston Common Baby Bellies crushed the Andrew Station Southies, 9-3, in Game 1 of the Elite Eight today. Black was 2 for 3 with a home run, a double, and 2 walks, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 4 at The Common Youth Field as Boston Common cruised to a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series.
Black had a big at-bat with two out in the bottom of the third inning. With his team down, 2-0, the center fielder hit a 3-run home run to put Boston Common ahead.
"We did more than enough to get the win," said Black.
Game 2 is set to be played tomorrow at The Common Youth Field. Slated to start are Jason Costcaps for the Andrew Station Southies and Tato Robles for the the Boston Common Baby Bellies.
Game 2 Summary:
Andrew Station Win Evens Series at 1
The Andrew Station Southies topped the Boston Common Baby Bellies by the score of 10-5 and moved into a 1-1 tie in the Elite Eight today. The largest share of the credit belongs to Andrew Station starter Hollywood Joe Horn, who threw 7 innings of 6-hit ball in the win.
Andrew Station used a well-timed hit by Justin Sauerkraut to capture the win. The left fielder socked a bases-clearing double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Southies ahead, 6-1. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.
In comments to the Andrew Station Observer, Horn admitted he's been told to improve his work habits. "But," he said, "I know when to take it to another gear."
Game 3 is scheduled for Thursday at Southies Field. The scheduled starters for the game are Anno Domingo for Boston Common and Jason Costcaps for Andrew Station.
Game 3 Summary:
Elite Eight Goes the Distance, Boston Common Prevails
The Boston Common Baby Bellies are off to the Final Four after an exciting Elite Eight triumph.
Boston Common downed the Andrew Station Southies, but needed the entire series to do so, with a 9-7 win tonight at Southies Field wrapping up the series 2-1.
"It's every guy in this room that made this happen. Without us all pulling in the same direction, we don't win this series," said Slow Joe Petrakis, who earned MVP honors for a standout offensive series.
Petrakis put up a .462 with a .533 on-base percentage in the series. He also had 1 home runs, drove in 4 runs and scored 4 runs himself.
The Boston Common Baby Bellies will play against the Diamond City Newsboys in the next round. Diamond City won their series against the Hester Mechanists 2 games to 1. The Final Four schedule will be announced after the Elite Eight finishes.
