May 26-27, 2038: vs Columbus (2)

Game 1: The Rays took a comprehensive 11-3 win over Columbus at Publix Park today. Daniel Malone had the game's big hit, a grand slam in the 6th after the Lightning had crept back within 5-3. It was his 3rd homer of the year and he's off to a great start, among the AL batting leaders at 352/430/544 to go with 9 steals, on pace for 6 WAR despite playing about 2/3 of the time as he's in a semi job-share with Jimmy Leonard. Daniel Vasquez doubled and drove in a pair, and Mike McKee (#5) went back-to-back Malone and drove in another run. Ron Adams was dealing today until he fell apart in the 6th when he allowed all 3 runs in a 5.2 5 3 3 4 8 outing to go to 7-0, 3.70. Vinny Willard remains the king of long relief with another 3 1/3 1-hit scoreless innings for save #4.

Game 2: Josh Carsello had a horrible first inning, allowing 8 runs (2 earned) and although the Rays tried valiantly to come back it was too big a hole and they fell 11-7 to the Lightning. The reigning AL Cy Young winner just didn't have it today, although he would have been out of the inning with only 2 runs allowed if not for a 2-out Jeff Baez error. But it was mostly on Carsello, who couldn't get anyone out afterward and allowed 6 hits and 3 walks in his 2/3 of an inning outing. Jeff Reece went 3 1/3 hitless innings in relief, but Damani Cotton and Billy Hoyte combined to allow 4 more runs. Offensively Daniel Malone stayed hot with a 2-run homer (#4), Danny Ayala went yard (#13), and Baez tried his best to atone for the error by driving in 3 on a pair of hits.

Team record: 31-15. Next up: the Yankees visit for 3.
