July 19-21, 2038: at Colorado (3)
Game 1: The Rays rocked the Rockies at Coors Field 8-3 in the series opener, making it 23 wins in their last 26 games for Tampa Bay. In a stadium where hitters make the headlines Ron Adams starred on the mound for Tampa Bay, taking a 5-hitter into the 9th up 8-1 before running out of gas and finishing 8 7 3 3 2 5 to improve to 13-2, 3.93. Bo Angeac got the Rays up and running in the 1st with a 3-run homer (#13) to cap a 4-run first while Omar Rodriguez was 4-5 with a double and an RBI. Ben Hill had his first MLB extra-base hit, an RBI double in the 7th.
Game 2: The Rays were thumped 7-1 by the Rockies tonight as veteran Jeremy Odle kept them in check (save another Bo Angeac homer, #14), and Josh Carsello continued his 2038 struggles by going 5.2 7 5 3 2 6 to fall to 7-6, 5.04. Damani Cotton wasn't much relief in relief as he gave up 3 straight hits upon entering and allowed a couple of Carsello's runners to score.
Game 3: Well things looked good for an inning. Danny Ayala hit a 3-run homer in the top of the first (#25) and Nate Thompson had a scoreless opening inning. Then things went to hell in a handbasket as the Rays didn't score again the rest of the way (and only managed 5 hits total) while the Rockies scored in every inning but one after the first and made yesterday's blowout look like a love tap as they won today 14-3. Thompson was gone by the third with 6 runs on 9 hits against and Kevin Kerstetter and Jeff Reece combined to allow 8 more and the Rockies amassed 20 hits in all. The best thing that can be said is that the series is over and we don't have to come back to this place for at least 3 years.
Team record: 68-26. Next up: 4 games in a normal stadium at sea level against Oakland.
