May 3-5, 2024: vs Detroit (3)

Not the best series for the Rays as they dropped 2 of 3 at home to the struggling Tigers while the Red Sox swept the Rangers to cut the Tampa Bay division lead in half to 2.

Tarik Skubal did not have it in the opener, allowing 3 homers and 5 runs in total as the Rays dropped a 7-3 decision. Skubal ended 4 5 5 5 1 5 and Alex Vesia allowed a couple of runs later after the Rays pulled within two. Adley Rutschman's 2-run single in the 4th was the offensive highlight.

The second game was a frustrating one for the Rays as they trailed 5-4 after 3 innings and had numerous chances to tie or go ahead in the innings to follow but couldn't break through and Detroit prevailed 6-4. Joe Ryan got knocked around early but stayed in and settled down a bit as we didn't want to go to the bullpen too early; he finished 5 7 5 4 0 6 and surprisingly he didn't allow any homers, but a 2-run Spencer Torkelson (who killed us these first two games) triple in the first was the big hit against. Adley Rutschman and Austin Meadows brought home runs in the 1st and Brandon Lowe launched a 2-run homer (#4) in the bottom of the 3rd but they couldn't get runners home from 3rd with one out in the 4th and 5th.

The Rays salvaged the series finale despite being held to 5 hits thanks to a brilliant performance from Griffin Canning in a 4-1 win. The righty went 6 4 1 1 0 9 to even his record at 2-2, 3.67 and Nick Anderson notched save #8 with a clean 9th. The offense wasn't plentiful but it was efficient with Wander Franco hitting a 1st-inning 2-run HR (#4) and Brandon Lowe brought home Joey Bart with a sac fly after Bart had tripled to make it 3-0 after 1. Lowe later added HR #5 in the 4th to make it 4-1.

Team record: 21-9. Next up: We head to Oakland for 3.
