August 23-26, 2038 vs Boston (4)
August 23: Placed OF Omar Rodriguez on the 10-day IL with a pulled rib cage muscle, recalled OF Ben Hill from AAA Durham.
Ben is back and will get to play a little more as we may hold our nose a few times and play him in the OF where's he rated 35 in LF and 30 in RF as his bat is special. Omar will be back after rosters expand so Hill likely gets to stay up through September.
Game 1: The Rays' 10-game win streak came to an end tonight in a tough 2-1 loss to the Red Sox at Publix Park. Ron Adams gave up a couple of solo homers in his 7 innings of work including one to noted Rays-killer Mario Aguilar, and that was enough to give Boston the win. Adams drops to 17-4, 3.79. The only Rays run came off the bat of just-recalled Ben Hill, who homered (#3) in the 7th. They had a chance to tie with 2 out in the 9th when Daniel Malone walked, stole second and went to third on the bad throw, but pinch-hitter Daniel Vasquez flew to deep center to end the game.
Game 2: The Rays bounced back to beat Boston 7-5 after taking a big early lead and holding on after some shaky bullpen work. Josh Carsello stayed hot by going 7 5 2 2 3 5 and improving to 10-6, 4.23, but Jeff Reece and Chris Toombs conspired to allow Boston to score 3 times and Ken Burgess had to come in and get the final out of the 8th. Kikuo Kawase put an end to the nonsense with a 1-2-3 2K 9th for save #29. Jaiden Hardway led the offense, going 3-4 with HR #20 while Danny Ayala (#33, a 2-run shot), Mike McKee (#14, solo) and Jimmy Leonard (#6, with a man on) also homered.
Game 3: Tampa Bay lost for the second time in three games to Boston after dropping a 6-4 decision. Danny Romero was roughed up early and suffered only his third loss of the season as he allowed 4 runs in the first 3 innings before settling in to finish 6 8 4 4 0 3. Vinny Willard gave up a 2-run homer in the 9th which proved to be the difference when the offense rallied late. But the bats were held to only 1 run over 7 innings and trailed 6-2 in the 9th before Jim Gebers blasted a 2-run pinch-homer (#22) to halve the Boston advantage. Ben Hill delivered a pinch-single and Jaiden Hardaway singled as well, but the rally ended with Jon Jimenez grounding out.
August 26: Placed IF Ramon Ruiz on the 10-day IL with a high ankle sprain, recalled IF Devin Boatman from AAA Durham.
Our injury cover for Jeff Baez ended up injured instead, as Ruiz will miss 4 weeks with the sprain suffered in yesterday's game.
Game 4: The Rays salvaged a split of the series with Boston thanks to an 8-2 win today. Jaiden Hardaway (#21) and Ben Hill (#4) homered in the first inning to send the Rays on their way, while Jim Gebers was 3-5 with 2 RBI. Hill also singled in a run his second time up and is hitting a cool 410/425/795 in 39 at-bats with the big club. Tim Gates started and wasn't his sharpest, but good enough to go 5.1 8 2 2 1 4 and improve to 17-4, 3.49. He left the bases loaded and one out in the 6th for Vinny Willard, who fanned the first two Sox he faced to end the threat. Billy Hoyte took over from there and went 3 1-hit innings to notch save #3.
Team record: 93-33. Next up: 3 games in Houston.
