October 6, 2038: NL Wild Card Game

Back in November 2030 we dealt Jack Leiter to the Reds for Jon Soranno. The trade worked out for us at first; Leiter had a Cy Young season with Cincinnati but tailed off after that, and Soranno was a mainstay in our rotation through last year. But there was a minor leaguer we had to throw in the deal to get it done, and his name was Johnny Soland. At the time Soland was our 2nd round pick the previous summer, taken as an infielder, and at the time of the deal I wrote that he "underwhelmed in his first exposure to pro ball and at best is a slap-hitting MLB 2B." Well he converted to pitching and the rest is history; after a rough first full season in 2036 when he went 3-22(!) but still put up 2.3 WAR, he was 12-10, 2.93 with only 11 HR allowed in 193 IP, good for 5.3 WAR with the ERA and WAR both 2nd in the NL. And tonight he dominated Milwaukee to send Cincinnati through to the NLDS. Usually these throw-ins amount to nothing, but sometimes they become potential Cy Young winners.

Also, some minor league hardware:

Rappaport's a nice player who should have an MLB career, but I'm thinking it's not likely with us. He's one of a long line of lefty power hitters with iffy contact skills we have in the system and he'll likely spend next year at Durham.
