Follow-up Question:

Why are the roles assignable via right clicking on a player name different than the roles that can be assigned via the Tactics tab?

From a speed perspective, it's easier to assign by right clicking on a player name. However it doesn't appear to have the granular effect that changing roles via the Tactics tab.

And I've found that changing a role via right clicking the player name can have a dramatic effect on morale. I set my star player's role to Offensive Forward and he got sad, however I gave him no role at all and he was happy.
