Walkers news: June 3 -- St. Louis 6, Des Moines 4, Game 1
Record: 34-19, 1st, 5.5 GA Springfield
Tied 2-2, St. Louis scored one run in the third and fourth innings, and two in the fifth on its way to a 6-4 win over Des Moines in the opening game of a doubleheader at Busch Stadium (2006).
The Harvesters' Jared Poland had led off the top of the third inning with a single off River Walkers starting pitcher Shane Drogo, and later scored when Joe Allen hit into a fielder's choice to tie it at 2-2.
St. Louis reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third with back-to-back two-out doubles from Marcos Francis and rookie Mark Herman off Harvesters starting pitcher Teddy Loetzch.
An inning later, the Walkers pushed their lead to 4-2.
Nathaniel Dixon led off with a single.
Dixon stole second and moved to third on a Drogo bunt.
Bob Saavedra then drove him in with a ground out.
St. Louis added two more runs in the fifth.
Yan C. Dixon drove in Herman, who had drawn a one-out walk, with a double of Loetzch.
Abdul-Nasser bin Amr later scored Dixon when he grounded out off Clyde Rayner.
A two-run homer from Poland off Brennan Weldon, who had just placed Drogo two outs in the seventh, made it 6-4.
That, however, was the end of the scoring.
Drogo (5-2) went 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out six and walked one.
Weldon settled down after the Poland homer and retired the next four batters he faced.
Nick Strother set Des Moines down in order in the ninth for his eighth save.
