Walkers news: July 25 -- St. Louis 5, Kansas City 2
Record: 57-37, 1st, 2 GA Springfield and Quad City
St. Louis jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 2.5 innings, and the River Walkers went on to defeat Kansas City 5-2 at Kauffman Stadium.
Jackson Miller doubled off Monarchs starting pitcher Tyler Martin with one out in the top of the first inning and scored on Marcos Francis two-out single to put St. Louis up 1-0.
That advantage grew to 4-0 in the third.
The Walkers put their first three hitters on base, the third a two-run double by Manuel Coke.
Coke, who had advanced to third on a throw to the plate, scored on a Francis fly ball to left.
The Monarchs did pull within 4-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth off Walkers starter Xavier Wigfall -- Alejandro Crespo collected both RBIs with a single -- but that would be the extend of their scoring.
St. Louis got an insurance run in the top of the ninth.
Miller scored for the second time after leading off the inning with a single off Yeison Rafael Santos.
He scored on a Francis single, as his RBI total for the game reached three.
Wigfall (6-7) lasted just long enough, five innings, to earn the win. He allowed two runs on four hits. He struck out four and walked two.
Nick Ruffalo notched the first two outs of the sixth, before giving way to Brennan Weldon, who finished that inning and also handled a silent seventh
Greg Sones and Bobby Westerman closed the win with scoreless innings.
Westerman earned his fourth save.
