June 14-17, 2040: at NY Yankees (4)
June 14: Activated 2B Jaiden Hardaway from the 10-day IL, optioned P Dan Anderson to AAA Durham.
Game 1: Jordan Perez was terrible, and the Rays couldn't overcome it in a 7-3 loss at Yankee Stadium in the opener of their 4-game series. Perez was hit to the tune of 3.2 6 7 3 2 2, giving up a pair of homers. Jimmy Leonard hit his 12th homer for a losing cause.
Game 2: Tim Gates pitched his best game in ages and the Rays disposed of the Yankees 4-1. Gates went 7 5 1 1 1 4 to improve to 4-3, 4.90 and Kikuo Kawase closed it out for save #16. The Rays had no extra-base hits but Jimmy Leonard was 2-4 with a steal and an RBI as the offensive standout.
Game 3: The Rays fell just short at Yankee Stadium 4-3 as New York pitching held them to 4 hits on the day. Jose Mendoza started and was brilliant through 3, gave up 3 runs in the 4th and finished 6.1 6 4 4 0 8 when the runner he left on scored in the 7th. Andy Ruggles (#17) and Danny Ayala (#19) had solo homers.
Game 4: Tampa Bay salvaged a split of the 4-game series with a 12-1 rout of the Yankees, banging out 20 hits in the process. Josh Alexander's 3-run homer in the 2nd (#25) made it 5-0 and broke the game open, with Andy Ruggles (#18), Mike McKee (#7) and Jimmy Leonard (#13) also going deep. Ruggles and McKee each drove in 3, and Josh Beckett had 4 hits. Jeff Brockman was the beneficiary of all this support and he coasted in a 6 6 0 0 0 9 outing, his best as a Ray to make him 4-1, 4.04 since joining the team. Chris Toombs got his 3rd 3-inning save of the year finishing it out.
Team record: 46-23, still 4 1/2 up on Boston. Next up: 3 games in Houston against the always-tough (46-27) Astros.
