June 18-20, 2040: at Houston (3)

Game 1: It was a classic pitchers' duel between Danny Romero and Houston's young ace Elias Gomez and neither were around for the decision when the Rays scored twice in the 10th to take a 3-1 win. Romero was a tidy 7 4 1 1 1 6 on 100 pitches and Gomez was even better, going 6.2 3 1 1 0 11, allowing only a Jeff Baez solo homer (#4) in the 3rd. The breakthrough came in the 10th for the Rays on RBI singles from Andy Ruggles and Jaiden Hardaway. Joe Trader picked up his 2nd win and Kikuo Kawase save #17.

Game 2: Jordan Perez pitched his best game as a Ray and a 5-run 6th broke things open as the Rays skated past the Astros 7-2. Perez went 6 2 0 0 2 4 on exactly 100 pitches to improve to 6-5, 4.87, and his teammates were beneficiaries of 10 walks and a key Houston error in that 6th inning. Josh Alexander had a 2-run double and Jaiden Hardaway a 2-run single in that frame, and a J.D. Wentzel error made all the runs unearned. Kevin Morley had a big day, walking 3 times, homering (#3) and scoring 3 times.

Game 3: It was a night of frustration for the Rays as they left 11 men on base including in key situations in the 7th and 9th, losing 4-3 as a result. In both of those innings the Rays had at least men on first and third and one out (the bases were loaded in the 7th) but in both instances neither Danny Ayala nor Andy Ruggles could come through with each whiffing in the 7th and popping up and lining out to end the game. Ruggles did have an RBI double in the first and Daniel Malone did his part, hitting a solo HR (#10) and tripling in a run. Tim Gates was not every good (5 6 4 4 3 8) but the bullpen held it close to no avail.

Team record: 48-24, still with a 4 1/2-game lead after our off-day. Next up: After that off-day we return home to face the Yankees for 3.
