August 3-4, 2041: vs Columbus (2)
Game 1: The Rays were shellacked in the opener of their 2-game series with Columbus 9-0 as former NL Cy Young winner Juan Rosales shut them down on 4 hits. Danny Romero was decent but not great at 5 8 2 2 2 6 but Jon Harbour, who had been so good this year in long relief, was lit up for 5 runs in 1 1/3 innings and the rout was on.
Game 2: Tampa Bay bounced back behind a strong performance from Jeff Brockman and some timely hitting to take a split of the 2-game series with a 4-2 win over the Lightning. Brockman went 6 6 1 1 1 7 on 99 pitches and improved to 17-3, 2.38 when Jimmy Leonard blasted a 2-run homer (#17) in the bottom of the 6th to break a 1-1 tie. Jose Mendez, who is now 6-8 this season as a pinch-hitter, came off the bench to deliver an RBI double for some insurance in the 7th. Kikuo Kawase also bounced back from his latest blown save to throw a perfect 9th with two whiffs for save #25.
Team record: 83-29. Next up: 3 games at home vs Toronto.
