The advantage is it changes the shooting angle for both the player and the goaltender. Matter of fact, many teams will intentionally line up a right or left handed shot on his opposite wing just to improve the shooting angle on the power play.

Not to mention, it opens the possibility of one timers. Not sure if it's taken into account in the game, though.
