May 9-11, 2042: vs Texas (3)

Game 1: Vinny Willard was very good for a change and the Rays took the opener of their series with Texas 3-1 at Publix Park. The righty was 6.1 6 1 1 2 4 to improve to 2-4, 6.75 and Kikuo Kawase handled the 9th for save #10. All 3 Tampa Bay runs came in the 4th, with Andy Ruggles singling in a run and Josh Beckett hitting another homer off a lefty, a 2-run shot (#3).

Game 2: The Rays overcame a bad first inning from Brad Jackson and scored 4 times in the 8th to overtake the Rangers 7-4 and make it 6 straight wins. Jackson allowed all 4 Texas runs in the 1st but he did settle in after that, finishing 6 6 4 4 2 6. Dan Anderson picked up win #3 with 2 innings of scoreless relief and Freddie Zamora finished for save #3. Doug Johns had a big day at the plate, going 3-3 and his 2-run single in the 3rd got them within 4-3. Dave Frick had the game-winning hit in the 4-run 8th, a 2-run double which put them ahead before Tony Cordova doubled him home.

Game 3: Tampa Bay completed the sweep of Texas behind a solid outing from Jeff Brockman with a 6-3 win, their 7th straight. Brockman improved to 4-1 off a 5.2 4 1 1 1 7 performance. Satoshi Soto pitched into and out of a jam in the 8th by walking a pair but striking out 3. Seth Williams was the star on offense, hitting a 2-run HR (#7) and driving in 3 while Tony Cordova added a 2-run double.

Team record: 31-11. We can't shake the Yanks, who swept Boston while we were doing likewise to Texas, so they remain 3 behind. Something's gotta give as the Yankees now visit for 4 games.
