Players of the Month
NR's Top Hitter Announced: Cope Kearns put together a good May to earn the North Region Batter of the Month prize. A virtual unknown, he made the most of his chance to prove to Beerthirty officials that he belongs on the big league roster.
The Sippers shortstop posted a .437 batting average with 13 home runs, 36 RBIs and 38 runs scored.
Kearns is hitting .403 for the season with 23 home runs, 67 RBIs and 77 runs scored. He has 85 hits in 211 at-bats and played in 53 games.
Grandson Quarles Selected May's Best Batter: Not known for his offensive prowess, Grandson Quarles set the league afire in May and took home the South Region Batter of the Month award.
The South Beach right fielder posted a steady .433 batting average, 16 home runs, 36 RBIs and 36 runs.
For the season Quarles is currently batting .426 with 24 home runs and 72 RBIs. In 54 games he has reached base at a .515 rate and scored 67 runs to date.
May's #1 Starter Named in NR: There's something about a young rookie winning the North Region Pitcher of the Month trophy that sends shock waves through the league. Such is the case with Scott Fuhr, a 14-year-old starter for the Lynn Pier Gamers.
In May, he topped off the month with a 4-0 mark and 1.80 ERA in 7 starts, tossed 50 innings, fanned 77 and held opposing teams to a .228 average.
To date this season, Fuhr has a record of 8 wins and no losses and a 2.68 ERA. He has appeared in 14 games and struck out 129 in 87.1 innings.
SR Premier Pitcher is Andrew Station's Horn: In May when the Andrew Station manager wrote the name "Horn" on the lineup card, he knew he had a good shot at winning. Start after start in the month, Hollywood Joe Horn took the hill, took charge and usually got the win.
He dominated with a 4-1 mark and 2.92 ERA in 7 starts. The gifted Southies star pitched 49.1 innings, fanned 62 and held opposing teams to a .242 average.
For his outstanding mound performance Horn was named the SR Pitcher of the Month by the baseball writers.
Up to now Horn has compiled an ERA of 2.83 with a 7-1 mark over 11 starts. He has 98 strikeouts in 76.1 innings and has held opponents to a .233 batting average.
Cape Cod Youth League Report
CCYL's #1 Batter Chosen: The top hitter in the Cape Cod Youth League in May was Wellfleet Settlement first baseman Dominant Phillips.
He was selected the Batter of the Month after batting .352, hitting 19 home runs, scoring 28 runs and driving in 47.
Hatchlings Starter Wins CCYL Pitching Award: The Pitcher of the Month has been picked and the Cape Cod Youth League trophy went to Truro hurler Ceasar Casino for his strong performance in May.
During the month, Casino was impressive with a 1.10 ERA and 4 wins and 1 loss. In 57.1 innings he struck out 83 and gave up 34 hits and 17 walks.
Providence Junior Pro League Report
PJPL Announces Outstanding Batter Award: West Seekonk left fielder Ken Debate put the wraps on a fine May by capturing the Providence Junior Pro League Batter of the Month honors today.
He put up a .289 batting average and .429 on-base percentage last month while racking up 14 home runs, 31 RBIs, 16 runs scored and 22 walks.
Woodlawn Starter May's Best Pitcher: Capping off a whirlwind month in which he went 5-0 with a 2.49 ERA, Quartz Hoertz was selected as May's Providence Junior Pro League Pitcher of the Month today. Reporters caught up with the elated Woodlawn starter as he left the clubhouse.
"I know it's difficult for pitchers -- when you have a bad start or two, people start wondering if you've lost it. Then you ride stretches like this one for all you can. You find it easier to come to the park every day because know you're contributing to the club, not just waiting for your turn in the rotation to make up for your last start."
Quartz Hoertz definitely contributed to the club. He had 6 starts, throwing 47 innings, striking out 27, and holding the opposition to a .244 average.
