Season 2 (1988)

“It’s deja-vu all over again”. In a rematch of the 1987 World Series, the 1890s from the Golden League defeated the 2010s in a classic 7 game championship series. Leading up to the championship, the top two teams with over 100 wins during the regular season, were upset in the semi-finals, setting up the rematch.

Sam Crawford was named the MVP as he joined the 30/30 club, notching 42 HR and 34 SB. He followed up his league leading RBI total of 140 RBI with another 136 RBI season. The pitching categories continue to be dominated by pitchers from the 1800s as John Ewing led the league with 22 wins and a 2.86 ERA in winning his first Cy Young Award.

Apparently, the long ball is alive and well. The average number of home runs by team increased from 237 to 268 this season. The first two 50+ HR players emerged (Rogers Hornsby, 50 & Manny Machado, 61).

Pat Malone (1930s) and Phil Knell (1890s) both threw no-hitters in June of the 1988 season.
