Tied 2-2, Jose Segura hit a solo home run off Kansas City reliever Mike Pillsbury to help lift St. Louis to a 3-2 win at Busch Stadium.
The homer, just the second of the season for Segura, came on a 3-1 pitch with two outs.
All the rest of the scoring came in the sixth inning.
In the top of the inning, Gerardo Bernal connected on a bases-loaded two-out single off River Walkers starting pitcher Kevin Hrdlicka.
Bob Saavedra evened the score with a two-run homer off Monarchs starter Tyler Martin in the bottom half.
Hrdlicka went six innings, allowing the run runs on four hits. He struck out six but did walk four.
Greg Sones handled the seventh inning and got the first out of the eighth.
Brett McVey (2-0) earned the win after finishing off the eighth.
Armando Cintron set the Monarchs down in order in the ninth for his third save.
