Your best bet is probably to have one ID appointed both GM and field manager. You can handle the GM duties on that ID and your friend can handle the manager duties on the same ID.
You could try to beat the system by creating two IDs one as GM only and one as manager only and see if you can somehow get them into the same team. I don't think it will work but it shouldn't take much time to find out for sure.
