Vida Blue, Roberto Clemente Take Home Honors in OL S373
I like the Quinta idea of individual awards, so I've picked a batter and a pitcher for OL S373. If anybody has a better case for another winner in either case, let me know.
Roberto Clemente of Sonara High wins the first ever Bennie Kauff Memorial Award as the MVP. Clemente hit .339 with 17 HR and 107 RBI. He was on the lPT leadeer board in numerous categogies and led the Broncs to a fourth place finish in OL.
I've renamed the award as the Bennie Kauff award, Kauff, whose full name was Bennie Michael Kauff, was nicknamed the "Ty Cobb of the Federal League," when he was the leading hitter for both seasons of the renegade loop.
Though I knew of his Federal League exploits, when I checked Wikipedia to see how he did in MLB, I found there was more to his story. He was a solid major league player, but he ran afoul of Kenesaw Landis, the vile and vindictive commissioner. Kauff faced a trial for an auto theft, and was suspended, pending the outcome. Though it turned out to have been a misunderstanding, and Kauff was acquitted in less than an hour, Landis made the ban permanent and subjected Bennie to vituperative claims of guilt. I did not know this story before I had thought of naming the award for Kauff, but it certainly convinced me to have his name replace Landis'.
As for the Denton True award, Vida Blue was the absolute ace of the Annadale crown-winning staff, going 25-4, with a 2.20 ERA. I assume that you already know that Cy Young's actual given name is Denton True Young. It just seemed facile to rename it as such, since it seems a little weird to have Cy Young in competition for the Cy Young.
