Walkers news: July 26 -- St. Louis 4, Cedar Rapids 2
Record: 54-43, 1st, 5 GA Kansas City
Down 1-0, St. Louis scored three times in the top of the sixth inning and went on to defeat Cedar Rapids 4-2 at Connie Mack Stadium (1960).
The win allowed the River Walkers to avoid a three-game sweep. The Grapplers still took four of six games in the back-to-back series.
An Arnold Hammond home run off St. Louis starting pitcher Jesse McDonald in the bottom of the second inning accounted for the only scoring going into the sixth.
With Grapplers starter Edwin Rivera still on the mound, the Walkers got things going with a one-out single by Marcos Francis.
Manuel Coke and Nick Shaw followed with back-to-back run-scoring doubles.
Shaw later scored on a Jackson Miller single.
A lead-off triple from Jose Morillo helped Cedar Rapids pull to within 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh.
Morrillo's triple came off McDonald, who subsequently exited the game.
David Henderson scored Morillo with a deep fly ball to center.
St. Louis got that run back in the top of the eighth.
Shaw scored it after drawing a one-out walk from Jordyn Ibarra.
A Mark Waterson single moved Shaw to second.
After a strikeout of Eddie Estrella, Anton Melendez took the mound for the Grapplers.
He walked two straight to send Shaw across the plate.
McDonald (4-6) allowed two runs on two hits over the first six innings. He struck out five and walked two.
Greg Sones, Scott Rissler and Bobby Westerman both pitched scoreless innings in relief.
Westerman upped his save total to 15.
