Try going to the Settings screen (from the start screen) and change the Current Skin to "dark" or "fhm", whichever one it is not using now. Then restart the game, change it back, and then restart again. That may fix the problem with the black text. If not, you may need to reset the game files - if you're on Steam, right-click on FHM8 in your Steam library, then select Properties, then "Local Files" and click "Verify Integiry of Game Files", and that will fix any broken graphics. If you're using the standalone version, just re-download and reinstall the last update and that will do the same thing.
It sounds like there may also have been some corruption to the save itself - if it still doesn't work properly after fixing the text, copy the files from either the rs_one or rs_two folders inside the save into the main save folder, replacing the files that are there now. Those are the backup saves, at least one of them should be from before the problem occurred and will work properly.
