July 16-18, 2027: at Cleveland (3)
This was supposed to be a 3-game series but the finale was rained out, so we only played two games and split them. The Yankees meanwhile took 2 of 3 from the Angels so they clipped 1/2 game off the division lead which is now 6 1/2.
The Rays took the opener 7-1 behind another great Joe Ryan start and a big 6-run 5th inning. Ryan toyed with Guardians hitters today, going 7 5 1 1 0 6 and is now 12-4, 1.99 as his remarkable (and likely final with the Rays) season continues. Tampa Bay was behind 1-0 going into that 5th before Yoelqui Cespedes tied the game with an RBI single, Victor Robles put them ahead with a 2-run single, and Alex Kirilloff cleared the bases with a double. Kelly Crumpton later added HR #16 with the bases empty.
Cleveland took a split as some sloppy defensive play by the Rays and quality pitching from Shane Bieber gave the Guardians a 7-3 win. With Kelly Crumpton in need of a rest, Kody Hoese took his 35 glove to 3B and made a couple of errors which led to 3 unearned runs off Wennington Romero (2-1), who finished 5.1 3 4 1 1 4. Bieber meanwhile went 6.1 4 1 1 1 8 against them and after he left they scored a couple in the 9th including a solo shot from Alex Kirilloff (#17).
Team record: 63-35. Next up: We get an off-day on top of the rainout, then face Oakland for 3 at the Trop.
