April 10-13, 2045: at NY Yankees (3)

Game 1: The Rays took the home opener for New York at Yankee Stadium with a middle-inning explosion, winning 8-5. Seth Williams had a big day, drilling a 2-run homer in the 4th (#3) and a 2-run double in the 5th as part of a 3-hit day, Tomas Laboy had a 2-run shot (#3) in the 6th and Jose Mendez was 4-5 with a double and RBI. Dan Robinson was effective again to make it 2 wins in 2 starts, going 6 5 3 3 4 4 and after Dan Anderson made a mess, Steve Forbes cleaned it up for his 3rd save.

Game 2: Greg Bookhart had to leave in the 2nd inning with a strained forearm and the bullpen did not cover itself in glory in a 10-3 Yankee blowout of the Rays. Bookhart should be able to return after his 10-day IL stint is up, but Jon Harbour, Leo Bernal and Ismael Vargas were each hit for 3 runs with Bernal off to a particularly rough start giving up 8 runs in 3 1/3 so far this year. Jose Castillo's first Rays homer, a 3-run shot in the 8th, was it for the offense. New Yankee free agent signing slugger Nelson Gamez had 3 homers for New York, including his 300th career round-tripper.

April 13: Placed P Greg Bookhart on the 10-day IL with a strained forearm, recalled P Jonathan Melendez from AAA Durham.

I've come to realize our pitching depth is not that great, and I might need to make a deal or two. Melendez will take Bookhart's spot in the rotation

Game 3: Another rough day on the mound for Rays pitchers saw the Yankees take the series with a 6-2 win. Joel Gird turned in his second poor start to begin the year, getting hit for 4.1 8 5 5 3 4 with a pair of homers allowed including another to Rays-killer Elias Aragune, a 3-run shot in the 3rd which broke the game open. For the second straight day Jose Castillo was the Rays offense, today hitting a 2-run triple in the 6th.

Team record: 6-4. Next up: 4 games in Boston including the traditional morning Patriots Day affair on Monday.
