June 26-27, 2028: vs Baltimore (2)
It was only a short 2-game set with Baltimore at the Trop, but it was a big series with the Orioles only 1 game back in the ridiculously-tight AL East, and the Rays rose to the occasion by taking both games including a marathon in the second.
The Rays took the opener from Baltimore behind another sterling performance from James Hays 5-2. After a Wander Franco error, Hays gave up a 2-out homer in the first and that was it for the night as he finished 8 4 2 0 0 9 and improved to 8-3, 2.84. A Cy Young repeat is a real possibility. Yasunari Uehara loaded the bases in the 9th but got a double play the end the game for save #12. The bats responded immediately in the first with 3 runs, keyed by a 2-run Andrew Greckel single and Alex Kirilloff added an RBI double as part of a 2-run 8th for insurance.
It took 16 innings but the Rays finally took the mini-sweep from Baltimore with a 2-1 win on Kelly Crumpton's 444-foot blast to dead center, his 24th homer of the year. Joe Ryan was solid in regulation (6 4 1 1 1 2), and while both teams had chances in extras neither could convert until Crumpton came through. Kendall Williams (2-0) got the win with three solid innings of relief, allowing only 2 hits and fanning 4.
Team record: 46-32. Next up: Another 2-game quickie series, this one at Fenway Park where we're slated to face two former Rays, Tyler Glasnow and Dustin May.
