This remains a mystery. I did some testing awhile back and although the game clearly uses many of the fields in the teams.csv file - and you can change them and the game will reflect your changes - team abbreviation is not one of them. IOW, of the 5 different team abbreviation fields in that file, none of them are the field that OOTP uses for the actual team abbreviation. Apparently, it is hardcoded somewhere. So if you want to use your own abbreviations, your only option is to manually change them each year.
Several months ago I requested that they change this to where either common sense abbreviations are used, or that we can edit them to our liking via the teams.csv file. I'll continue to push for it. Others should, too
