A guess: Do your standings have a column for RW (regulation wins)? That's the first tiebreaker in the NHL now. It's not ROW (regulation/overtime wins), which means there wasn't a shootout. RW means the team won in 60 minutes. I haven't seen an RW column in my standard game. So if it works like NHL-irl but that column isn't on the screen, yep, it's gonna seem random.

Head-to-head points
Overall goal differential
Overall goals for
