Rick Koenig drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning from St. Louis reliever Leo Hermosillo to force in the tie-breaking run and help give Kansas City a 2-1 win at Kauffman Stadium in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Monarchs had gotten their first three baserunners while Maximilliano Minelli was on the mound.
He walked two batters and gave up a double to T.J. Leitch before being replaced by Hermosillo.
Hermosillo got himself into a 3-1 count before throwing ball four to Koenig, scoring Juan Gonzalez with what would be the game-winning run.
Monarchs starting pitcher Luis Gonzalez went five innings, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out three and walked the same.
Bobby Stover got the first two outs of the sixth for KC, before being replaced by Omar Moreno.
Moreno (1-0), who would get the win, finished the sixth and worked a scoreless seventh.
Josh Paul (0.2 IP) and Jose Patricio (1.1) combined to finish off the game for the Monarchs.
Patricio posted his fourth save.
