Walkers news: May 5 -- Top SS prospect Gomez called up; Urbalejo tagged for AAA
The St. Louis River Walkers have called up 25-year-old shortstop R.J. Gomez from AA Springfield and sent veteran infielder Tony Urbalejo for AAA Memphis.
Urbalejo will have to clear waivers before he can join the Redbirds.
The Walkers re-signed veteran shortstop Daylen Reyes in the offseason hoping he could play the position again for them in 2039.
But Reyes, 37, has struggled mightily batting just .119 with two RBIs in his first 26 games (23 starts).
St. Louis signed Gomez as a free agent in the offseason.
He has played at both AAA and AA Springfield this season and struggled at the plate at both levels.
At AAA, Gomez started four games and hit just .059 with one homer and two RBIs.
For Springfield, Gomez started 21 games and hit .182 with two homers and 10 RBIs.
Urbalejo got into six games in St. Louis, hitting .176 with one homer and one RBI.
