September 18-20, 2028: at Baltimore (3)

The Rays took 2 of 3 from the reeling Orioles, reducing their magic number to 5 as the Yankees swept the Jays to stave off division elimination.

It took 10 innings but the Rays finally prevailed over Baltimore in the opener at Camden Yards 3-1. Pablo Lopez was brilliant (6 4 1 0 0 6) but was done in by an unearned run off a 2-base Wander Franco error. Franco atoned in the 10th with his 3rd hit of the day, an RBI single to give the Rays some insurance after Ed Howard singled in the winner. Jose Crespo got his 3rd Rays win in relief after escaping men on 1st and 3rd with nobody out in the 9th, and Shane Panzini pitched the 10th for his 2nd save.

Slade Cecconi continues to alternate good and bad starts and today was time for one of the latter as the Orioles snapped a 13-game losing streak which took them out of the wild card race with a 7-2 win. Cecconi (7-7) was roasted to the tune of 3 9 7 7 1 2. Wennington Romero was brilliant in mop-up work, fanning 6 in 3 perfect innings.

Tampa Bay came back late to take the rubber game of the series 6-5 over the Orioles on Costanzo Ricciardi's 2-run double in the 8th which put them ahead to stay. James Hays had a rough early go of it, allowing a pair of 1st-inning homers to put the Rays in a 3-0 hole but he settled in after that and ended up improving to 15-8 after going 7.1 5 4 4 0 11. Yasunari Uehara allowed an unearned run in the 9th but survived for save #28. J.P. Crawford got a rare start and took advantage by homering to lead off the game, his first round-tripper in Rays colors, and Alex Kirilloff had a huge game, going 4-5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI.

Team record: 91-61. Next up: 4 games in Boston.
