Walkers news: June 3 -- St. Louis 4, Peoria 3
Record: 25-30, 7th, 7 GB Quad City
Rookie Billy Hermann shutout Peoria into the sixth inning on his way to earning his first career major-league victory in St. Louis' 4-3 win over the Rivermen at Busch Stadium (2006).
Hermann (1-1), who had allowed six runs in just four innings in his previous start of 2039, a 7-3 loss to Cedar Rapids, lasted 5.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out six and walked three.
Both Peoria runs came in the sixth when Hermann allowed four of the inning's first five batters to reach base.
In that span, Tony Gamez drove in the Rivermen's first run with a double.
Hermann exited after issuing a walk to Eric Nichols which loaded the bases with one out.
Brett McVey took over and struck out Bobby Dotson before walking Roberto Guerra to force in a second run.
McVey then struck out Jeff Neiderer to end the inning with the River Walkers still leading 4-2.
St. Louis went up 1-0 with a run off former Walkers farmhand Danny Burch in the bottom of the first.
Kerry Fackelman led off with a double. He scored on a Nick Shaw two-out single.
Three straight hits off Burch led to St. Louis scoring two more runs in the fourth.
Shaw led off the inning with a single.
A Joe Allen double moved Shaw to third.
Mark Waterson singled scoring Shaw and making it 2-0.
Zach Wenman then hit a fly ball deep enough to score Allen.
Manuel Coke hit his 14th home run of the season off Joey Thacker, another former Walker, in the fifth making it 5-0.
McVey came out to start the seventh inning and recorded two outs before leaving with a runner on first and two outs.
Leo Hermosillo struck out Wes Cohen to end the seventh.
Hermosillo set Peoria down in order in the eighth.
Closer Craig Fritzler had another rough outing allowing a run on one hit, a walk and a wild pitch.
But with a runner on second, Fritzler struck out Cohen for his eighth save.
