I applaud your self-control in not just going into commish mode and reversing this (pretending it was a bad fever dream, never happened!). I'm sure I would be tempted to. (Though I respect my fictional universe too much also to actually muck about with the fictional "reality" like that.)
Given that OOTP doesn't offer the chance of a true Damon Rutherford/J. Henry Waugh type outcome, this seems about as close as OOTP comes. And yeah, heartbreaking indeed.
