Analysis
With 40 games down and 68 yet to go, the CBO's second month is approaching the end of its second month. In that time, a few teams have emerged through consistency, hot streaks, or a combination of the two. This week, a hot team has taken over the top spot. Let's take a look at the Top 5.
#1 Jamaica Plain - They have won nine games in a row, but the Red Rockets still trail Atom (#2) by a game in the Minutemen League. Jamaica Plain zapped through their week with sweeps of Egret (#23) and University Point (#8). By being swept, the Deathclaws have now dropped five straight and now trail the Cats by three games.
#2 Atom - They have not won nine straight but the Cats did have a perfect week to move atop the ML. Atom swept FHE (#13) for the second-straight week and Goodneighbor (#17). At 27-13, they are atop the SCA and tied with the 3rd and 4th teams in the CBO for the best record.
#3 Fort Hagen - The Silver Shroud started the week with a loss but then won the last four for a good week. The Shroud split on their road trip to Finch Farm (#14) and then won all three at Abernathy (#22), the NCA's coldest team at 2-8 in their last 10. On the flip side, Fort Hagen is the NCA's hottest team at 8-2 in their last 10 and now lead the Institute League by six games over Starlight (#9), Concord (#10), and Sunshine Tidings (#11).
#4 Nordhagen Beach - Like the Shroud, the Party Boys went 4-1 on the week except on a different path. Nordhagen Beach started the week by winning both games at Lexington (#15) and then winning the last two of three at Easy Town (#19).
#5 Diamond City - The Swatters are tied with Roxbury (#6) for first place in the Railroad League. Diamond City won both games at University Point and then won the first and last games of a three-game series at FHE.
Feature Story: Fort Hagen and Nordhagen Beach and All the Rest
While the SCA has a number of teams that look to be legitimate contenders to win their association, the NCA is much different. In the NCA, both the Shroud and Boys are atop the association with a 27-13 record. The rest of the association features three teams at 21-19 and two more at 20-20. Everyone else is below .500.
Fort Hagen has a legitimate shot to supplant the Party Boys as the NCA representative in the Sole Survivor Series. With the CBO's top batting average, the offense has been a beast in the IL. Four players are batting over .300 with CF Ben Pawlak (.358/11/35) in the Nuka-Hitter Award conversation. C Bixton Moore (.303/10/24) has been a pleasant surprise from the 8th position. He currently leads the CBO for catchers in home runs, SLG (.583), total bases (77), and ISO (.280). In all, he is in the top 5 of catchers in 17 of 24 offensive categories.
Pitching has also been a successful endeavor if you count only their first three pitchers in the rotation. With that said, the loss of SP Mike Cartrette to a major injury may be the one factor that prevents the Shroud from being a true championship contender. As of now, Derek Green (4-1, 4.19), Brent Hooker (5-1, 2.44), and Matt Hope (6-1, 2.33) are getting the job done, but fourth starter All Day Acosta (1-4, 12.27) will need to be replaced via a trade.
Nordhagen Beach is atop the NCA in both runs scored (220) and runs allowed (135). Despite not being as successful this season as they were last season when they operated as a machine, the Boys are still looking better offensively than they did a year ago. Both RF Jonathan Angelou (.377/10/33) and LF Michael Fogcrawler (.322/14/32) are in the Nuka-Hitter Award conversation. CF Maxx Murtagh (.311/9/22) may also enter that conversation.
Pitching is across the board successful with all four starters finding success. Only Tommy Beach (2-2, 5.97) has had his struggles this season, but Beachboy Nut (8-1, 1.77), Chet Arthur (5-5, 2.93), and Matt Ranger (8-0, 2.96) are all pitching well.
No other team in the NCA appears to be in the same league as either the Shroud or Party Boys. Only injuries could factor into either team not battling for the right to play in the Sole Survivor Series. Even then, both teams have pieces they could move to replace any broken or weak parts they may have.
PAM had both teams battling for the right to play in the Sole Survivor Series. She also predicted Angelou and Pawlak to finish 1-2 in the Nuka-Hitter Award competition. She may have hit the robobrain on the dome with those picks. Then again, based on the past few seasons, who would not have made those predictions?
