July 18-19, 2029: at Baltimore (2)
The Rays dropped both games to Baltimore and coupled with the Yankees taking a pair from toothless Toronto, the division lead is down to six games.
Toothless could be the adjective to describe the Rays' offense in this series as they lost the opener 4-0 and managed only 4 hits. Shane Panzini (7-7) gave up a homer to the first batter he faced, because of course he does, but gave the Orioles nothing after that at 5 5 1 1 2 4. Gavin Bruni surrendered his first runs as a big leaguer, but all three were unearned thanks to an Ed Howard error.
The second game wasn't much of a better showing for the bats as they lost a 2-1 squeaker. Joshua Baez's 19th homer, a solo shot in the second, gave them a brief lead. Dave Cedeno (2-1) pitched decently (5.1 6 2 2 2 4) and the bullpen got out of a few late-inning jams, but it didn't matter as the Rays were held to five hits. Might have to start thinking about that Jose Ramirez trade again.
Team record: 61-36. Next up: Boston visits the Trop for 3.
