Walkers news: April 11 -- Madison 8, St. Louis 0
Record: 4-5, 5th/Tied/w. Des Moines, 4 GB Cedar Rapids
Chris Brakefield tossed six shutout innings and Madison beat the tar out of St. Louis starting pitcher Brent Autin, as the Muskies avoided a three-game sweep with an 8-0 win at Comiskey Park (1969).
Brakefield (2-0) was dominant allowing three hits (two singles and a double) in his six innings. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter.
By the time he left, the Muskies had their 8-0 lead, and their bullpen kept it that way with two scoreless innings from Jerry McCune and one from Bryce Jaksic.
With the River Walkers bullpen having carried a heavy load through the season's first eight games, Autin was asked to take one for the team.
It hurt.
The right-hander gave up eight runs on 15 hits in six innings. He did strike out six and walk one.
Madison went up 2-0 in the bottom of the second.
It opened the inning with four straight singles, with Hector Hildalgo driving in one with his.
Mark Holland plated the other when he hit into a fielder's choice.
The Muskies banged out four more hits in the third, this time scoring three runs.
Hildalgo collected two more RBIs, this time with a double.
Kevin Militello made it 5-0 when he drove in a run with a fielder's choice.
Jay Fitzgerald tripled off Autin in the fourth to drive in a run.
He later scored on an Adam Macklin fly ball.
Matthew Pankhurst homered off Autin in the fifth.
Hildalgo considered his onslaught by following that with a triple.
A Militello double made it 8-0.
