You better of start with an NHL team as its a bit easier than managing in smaller leagues. Second start as GM only and let the head coach do lines and tactics, you just try to put together a team.
My personal favourite line composition is usually:
Perimeter Shooter/Sniper - Two Way F - Playmaker/Setup Man
Power Forward - Two Way F - Offensive Forward
Counterattacking - Aggressive Forecheck - Grinder/Power Forward
Grinder - Counterattacking - Grinder
Two Way D - Quaterback
Two Way D - Mobile D
Shutdown D - Old School D
