1938 Offseason
A few skippers sent packing, with Bill Pounds (Red Sox), Otis Clymer (Cubs) and Hank Schreiber (Reds) all now out of work, as is Indians GM Tony Steele.
We have one real decision to make, namely whether to re-up on Little Poison or Red Worthington. In the end, I go with the former and lock him down on a 2/$22k deal.
We tender for both of our arb-eligible players, Ken O’Dea and Bud Tinning. All of our other FA including Red Ruffing, who is seeking a bigger and longer contract than we’d ever consider, are let go. We’ll look at how Ruffing is feeling once he hits the FA market, as it is almost guaranteed we’ll be using our ticket on a pitcher.
The list of retirees features Kiki Cuyler, Travis Jackson, Hack Wilson, Topper Rigney, Eric Erickson, Bill McCall, Sam Streeter, Specs Toporcer, Max Bishop, George Scales and Lefty O’Doul.
